Lorem Ipsum

Where will you go?

Plot Synopsis

Lorem Ipsum begins in a pitch black portion of the afterlife: a limbo between existence and non-existence. The player is an androgynous figure about to be assigned an afterlife by an anonymous deity. However, they're informed that their status as a "nonbeliever" means that they'll be erased from existence. When the realization of a permanent death sets in, the player character pleads for a second chance, or at least a better outcome. Amused by the player's hysteria, the deity agrees to let them exist on one condition: they must plan out and construct an afterlife suitable for those that lack a religion, all in the span of a century.

Game Mechanics

The game will be an adventure game with role-playing and story-telling elements incorporated. The goal is to explore as many of the pre-existing afterlives as possible: in doing so, the player can gather enough inspiration to make a successful afterlife.

"Inspiration" will serve as both the currency for the game and as experience points. More inspiration means that the player can buy items to use for their afterlife or to aid them on their journey.

In each afterlife, the player will interact with the major deities of each religion as well as souls that inhabit the realm. Inhabitants can give the player useful items that can either speed up puzzles, unlock certain areas, or repel monsters/demons easier.

The monsters and/or demons encountered will be native to the said religion, and the player will have to solve a puzzle or play a mini game in order to escape unharmed. Monsters and/or demons cannot be killed, only repelled. Repelling monsters give the player inspiration as well.

The choices that the player makes will decide if the afterlife they construct will succeed or fail. If the player fails to construct a stable afterlife or they die from a demon/monster encounter, they are erased from existence and the game ends. If the player is successful, they will unlock a normal ending.

Items recieved from the deities inhabiting each realm will aid the player in their ultimate goal, and different combinations of these items will unlock different endings. This is because each item has a different effect if implemented. For example, using Styx water from the Ancient Greek afterlife will allow the player to erase memories.

Players can customize their character with "skins" that are unique to each afterlife and/or the culture in which that afterlife is derived from. For example, players that are traveling within the Christianity sector of the game have the option to wear Western style clothing from different time periods. All "skins" will come in three varieties: masculine, feminine and androgynous. Each afterlife will have a default "skin" but the player can buy extra "skins" and accessories with "inspiration."

The afterlives - and their subsections, if any - will have different art styles that reflect the culture they originated from. For example, the gameplay within the Buddhist afterlife would have an art style reminiscent of ancient temple murals. This will be used to fully immerse the player in the cultural aspects of the game as well as provide an aesthetically pleasing gaming experience.

Afterlives

The afterlives available through regular gameplay will include:

  • Ancient Egypt
    • This will setting will serve as the tutorial for the game. The anonymous deity will reveal themselves to be from this area and act as a guide for the player here
  • Ancient Greece
  • Abrahamic Faiths
    • This will be split into three realms: Islam, Christianity and Judaism
  • Buddhism
  • Hinduism
  • Shinto

Secret sections of these afterlives will include:

  • Land of the Dead: this sector will be based off of the Mexican Holiday Día de los Muertos
    • it can be unlocked by talking to an inhabitant from the Christianity sector

Market Analysis

Many of the games circulating within the gaming community that have religious undertones center around Christianity; there are rarely any other games that highlight other religions. As such, I believe this game has the opportunity to stand out amongst competitors and market itself on this unique quality.

The gaming industry was worth $78.61 billion in 2017 and is projected to increase to over $90 billion by 2020 [2]. As of now, it is projected that there will be $152.1 billion spent on games by the end of 2019 [1].

Thus, the gaming industry is highly profitable due to the size of its user base, with over 2.5 billion video gamers all over the world [1]. As technology continues to grow and expand into new areas, the market base for video games will increase as well. Thus, investing in games and/or gaming companies can result in large revenues.

The platform of choice will be the PC as well as the Nintendo Switch. It is projected that console-based games will be the fastest-growing segment of 2019 with a growth of 13.4% to be worth $47.9 billion, which will outpace mobile gaming [1]. PC gaming, on the other hand, is projected to grow 3.5% to total $39.5 billion by 2022 [1]. Although the mobile game platform could be good due to its worth of $68.5 billion [1], the amount of processing power needed for the game would most likely exceed what a phone could handle.

Diversity

This game idea will showcase diveristy by informing the audience about some of the religions that exist in the world. The main goal is to foster a sense of common humanity by highlighting the similarities found: doing so will allow people to be more understanding and less judgmental of others who have a different faith than them.

Controversies that have erupted over the inclusion of religions often voice displeasure with having the said faiths misinterpreted or the game itself was ignorant of a specific faith's practices[1]. If the game is made, experts from each religion will be sought out and they will work closely with the developers. This is to ensure that the religion represented in the media is true to its form and will not insult those that practice the faiths in the game. This will also help ensure that the line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation is not crossed. After all, "greater awareness leads to greater consideration and ultimately a more informed product" [2].

Despite this, the showcasing of different cultures on a media platform will allow players from different backgrounds to see themselves on the screen. Due to the large influence of media today, allowing a Person of Color (PoC) to see themselves on the screen in a positive light can both create a sense of cultural pride and help dispel some of the negative stereotypes associated with a culture/religion. This can, in turn, lead to first or even second generation immigrants feeling more inclined to practice their beliefs and preserve their culture. It can also result in less stigma and fear towards certain religious groups. The less ignorant people are of others that differ from them, the more they will be willing to accept such persons.
